Swapp: a car rental app for the Careem super app

Swapp's app had aged. Swapp is a car rental marketplace in Dubai, and its interface had not kept up with current technology or with how people now expect an app to work.

During the project the brief grew. Swapp came close to a deal with Careem, and the app had to become something that could live inside the Careem super app while still looking like Swapp.

Our role: the whole design, from zero

Swapp asked for a complete refresh of all its user interfaces. We did all of the design work, UX and UI included, and the code was not part of our scope. We designed the app from zero instead of patching the old screens.

When Careem came into the picture, we moved the work onto Careem's design system and worked together with Careem's design teams, so that the Swapp app could be integrated into the Careem super app.

Two decisions that shaped the app

Swapp's identity inside Careem's rules

Careem's guidelines are strict and its design system is well maintained. We kept Swapp recognisable as Swapp while following those guidelines closely, because the app had to sit inside the super app without looking out of place.

How much to show on the home screen

The hardest question was how much information the home page could carry without overwhelming users. A car rental marketplace has a lot to offer at once, and the home page is where all of it competes for space.
